multi-channel audio files

I've been researching online and understand that the ipad is able to play mutlichannel-audio files (ie 5.1, or more than regular 2-channel stereo files) by means of "pass-through", which means the ipad doesn't actually output more than L+R but can pass on this data to a device that can then de-code it to the various channels.

There seem to be endless file-types for audio and video files but i'm wondering if anyone has successfully managed to get more than 2 channels of audio playback from an ipad perhaps by using some external hardware such as a surround-sound de-coder? Ultimately it would be great to be able to play at least 3 channels of audio from the iMix app, as a few others have suggested in other posts.

So, i'm interested to hear of anyone else who may be (or already) playing back multichannel audio from their ipad.

I have the same question! As a band I would like to have one track as a click track, and still have stereo tracks for our backup tracks.

You can achive this with combination of iMiX16 Band, Audiobus and for example Cubasis or AUM audio mixer apps. iMiX16 Band can route each section of audio channels (1-16, 17-32, 33-47 and 48-64) to different Audiobus input which means you can route click and stereo tracks to separate hardware outputs. For example i am using iMiX16 Band, Cubasis and Steinberg UR44 hardware device.
