External Display Overscan setting not working correctly

I am having difficulty in getting the External Display Overscan setting to work properly. The default setting always gives me a black border around my videos when they play, so they are not filling the screen entirely. I can change the setting to NONE, and follow the instructions to restart the app and reconnect the external display, and can get it to work temporarily, but the setting never seems to remain. The next time I open the app and connect the external display, the black border is back, even though the setting still says NONE.

Can anyone help?

Hi guys,

update has been released. Download it via App Store. Make sure you set Overscan Compensation to NONE. It should work. Here it works on all external displays we have.

Hooray i found a solution!!! I was right. This is an iOS 13 problem, but i have found a fix. It is working here on external monitor, TV, Apple TV, ... :)))

Overscan compensation must be set to NONE!

We will release the update next week.

Grega

Amazing, thanks so much! Looking forward to installing the update!

Hi,

thank you for the info! But on older iOS’s overscan compensation works. I tested it myself. That is why we add it into the app. Try set it to None or Bounds on your iPad mini. Just make sure you:
- disconnect HDMI,
- in iMiX16 set overscan,
- restart the app,
- connect HDMI when app is in foreground (not home screen).
On iOS 13 it seems overscan has no effect at all.

Thanks for the details Gregor, but it doesn't seem to be an iOS 13 issue. I just revived an iPad Mini (1st gen with iOS 9.3.5) and the result is the same.

There _is_ a difference to note though.

iMix16 Pro shows the connected output as 1600x900. I'm guessing that's the maximum resolution that the iPad Mini supports via HDMI. I have more evidence to support this because when I played a 1080p video via the Camera Roll it was _also_ scaled down, and seemingly the exact same amount.

It looks that for all 1920x1080p videos on all iPads, the result is a video that is scaled down to 1600x900 resulting in a black frame around the entire video.

Hi guys,

i did a lot of research regarding this subject. According to the developers this is an iOS 13 issue. In some configurations it works in some it does not. Very strange. For exampe: if i turn on screen mirroring to Apple TV i get a full screen as expected. If i connect projector i get full screen as well. But if i connect standard 1920 x 1080 HD monitor or TV i get black border.
And this works regardless how i set overscan compensation. Developer documentation says it should be set to None to get borderless result.

Using the same code in MiX16 PRO for macOS i don't have this issue at all.

I guess Photos app does not use the same framwork for external display as we developers have to.

Hopefully solution or fix will be soon available.

Grega

I can reproduce this problem as well. iOS 13.5 on an 11" iPad Pro, using the Apple USB-C to HDMI adapter. The video appears to be inset on the external display with a black border all the way around. This happens with both "Fit Screen" and "Fill Screen" checked as well, playing a 1920x1080 video file imported from the camera roll. Playing the clip from the camera roll directly shows the full screen video as expected.

I have this same issue. I'm able to reproduce it on both iPads in my possession:

12.9" iPad Pro (1st gen)

9.7 iPad (7th gen)

Both iPads are running iOS 13.4.1

Reproduction steps:

Connect Apple Lighting to HDMI adapter

Connect HDMI cable between adapter and HDMI display

Play a 16:9 video file from iOS Camera Roll

Result: Video is played in full screen, video is not scaled down, no black frame is present around video.

Launch iMix16Pro

Load the same video clip

Play video clip

Result: Video is scaled down to fit in the action-safe area of a 16:9 video, a black frame is present around video.

I think i do. How did you add video into iMiX16? Via Photo icon inside iMiX16 or as a file with Files app?

D

Yes play video but not a t same quallity as photo gallery for example.

I play one full HD video, with IOS photo app in external monitor and its full screen and real quallity 1920x1080p, if i launch same video in your APP rescaling original and it's other resolution, do you understand ? Same video plays Low quallity in your app.

Sorry but i don’t understand. Who is compressing videos? iMiX16 app does not compress anything. It just plays videos.

VGA or HDMI original Apple adapter work the same.

D

Compress = bad quallity useless

Not compress = good for meetings

Issue 1 it work's only with VGA to full screen?

Can you explain issue no. 2 ??? What do you mean by compress and not compress??? If i understand correctly you can get video full screen from iMiX16 app?

D

Hi

I open only your APP,  and connect Hdmi, Mix16 green button is 1920x1080, there are two different issues.

1- if I launch video to external screen has a big black frame arround video, video is not full the screen.

2- When i load a video, compress process video of 16Mix lose too much quallity in final cue. If I play same video no compress by Mix16 it see perfectly anf full screen.

There are any option to not compress the videos ?

Best regards

Hi,

connect iPad, HDMI adapter and external display. Then go to Video section of iMiX16 app. What info is inside green info button (bottom right): External Display Connected width? x height?

And by bad resolution you mean only black border on external display or like poor video signal?

Sometimes is important what to connect and what to run first. Try this:
- make sure all apps are closed
- connect Apple adapter
- connect external display and wait for iPad home screen to appear
- run iMiX16 app

I am using Apple to VGA adapter, 40 meters of VGA cable, VGA to HDMI adapter (at the end of the signal, because TV does not have VGA input) and get Full HD resolution on a big screen TV.

Grega

Hello, I'have the same problem, not full screen signal and I have other question, the resolution is too bad, is there any option to change the quallity of videos output, because the idea is to use in a meetings and minimum we need real fullhd resolution, the original videos in photos app library is perfect if i play the video but not through mix16app.

I use oficial apple HDMI adaptor and my ipad has the last ios version.

Best regards

Hi,

thank you for the info. So just to be clear, using the same adapter and the same external display VLC fills external screen and iMiX16 does not? If so, can you send me via email two photos of external display when VLC and when iMiX16 is running video on it.

Regards,
Grega

I have to repeat myself:
- are you using the latest iOS?
- are you using original Apple usb-c hdmi adapter?

And also:
- did you try with other apps, for example Photos which detects and uses external display too?
- go to Settings > Display and Brightness and check if you can set additional external display setting there.

Did you try using mac or pc just to check if hardware (video scaler) is working ok?

Grega

Hello Grega! Im using the last IOS

I use a adapter of another brand different to apple (not a cheap brand) but Im using VLC for example and the screen shows me the full width. It uses external display too.

with IMix Pro it doesnt work this way. It shows a black frame in the height and the width.

i can understand if I do a 4:3 And the external screen is 16:9 it doesnt fit the full height but the width should be working fine, isnt it? At last one of the both sides.

I was thinking it was a problem with the adapter but I saw this is working in VLC app.

thank you for the help!

Hello! i'm having the same problem and I don't know what else can I do... I'm trying to use a external LED screen (it uses a video scaler to works) and I'm doing it with my Ipad pro 11. Im connecting it with a usb-c to hdmi adaptor. And the problem is It doesnt fit all the screen even if I design the video with the same resolution. What can I do? :(

Hi, thank you for all information.

I have recheck the code and there is no bug. Overscan is properly set as suggested by Apple.

It could be a bug in iOS.

Do you have a chance to use Lightning to VGA adapter? I am using it all the time and don’t have any problems with it.

R

I'm using a lightning to HDMI adaptor from Apple. Connecting to a projector.

At present what I'm having to do to correct the issue, is:

close the app,

disconnect the adaptor,

restart the app,

reconnect the adaptor and load my show.

Sometimes I may have to do this a couple of times before the output is displayed properly. And it only works if I do all that in that exact order. I just wonder why, if I have it permanently set to no overscan, does it keep reverting to putting a border around the image until I restart the app a couple of times?

I forgot to ask: lightning to VGA or HDMI? Original from Apple or 3rd party? Connecting to TV or projector? Thank you.

I have the latest iPad (6th generation), running iOS 11.4.1

Hi, which iPad model and which iOS version do you have? Regards, Grega
