Does the app on iPad work, running in the background, mapped to controller?

Hello,

I am a solo musician on stage with a keyboard a microphone and an iPad.

I have 2 questions for you.

1.

I want to run your app on my iPad with a lightning to HDMI adapter to a beamer to play videos (and their audio) to a screen behind me. Also I want to connect the Arturia Beatstep to trigger the videos.

Now you advertise that your app does this so that is not the question... BUT On my iPad I want to run at least 2 other (audio) apps for my show, so my question is, will the app run in the background and will the mapping to the Beatstep keep working? In the background? Or does the app only work when it is running in the foreground?

2.

Does bluetooth midi work currently?

Can I use a sequencer to send midi triggers to your app?

Kind regards.

Hi,

1. because you are using video, app must be in the foreground, otherwise you will have iPad home screen on external display,

2. no, midi works via usb and wifi.

Thanks you for your answer.

Regarding your answer to question 1;

So if I switch away from the imix16 app, my iPad homescreen will be on external display? But as soon as I switch back to imix 16 (to make it foreground app again) will it automatically switch back its output to external display? How does detection of app and activation priorities to external display work anyway? I might also work with a HDMI splitter like the one in the link in my setup, do you foresee problems? Does the signal always have to be 'hot' (for lack of a better term) to be recognised/send thru? https://www.amazon.com/HDMI-Switch-4K-Splitter-Bi-Directional/dp/B079JQ9XXV/ref=sxin_2_ac_d_pm?ac_md=1-0-VW5kZXIgJDEw-ac_d_pm&cv_ct_cx=hdmi+splitter+1+in+3+out&keywords=hdmi+splitter+1+in+3+out&pd_rd_i=B079JQ9XXV&pd_rd_r=7d091573-867b-4de8-907f-06af7a5da3cf&pd_rd_w=KH2EN&pd_rd_wg=S1BHP&pf_rd_p=709d2064-e546-4799-9e66-b352ea89951f&pf_rd_r=R9RS8X4D017HPT9WC66P&psc=1&qid=1578744653

Sorry if my Q's seem overly specific, Im just trying to solve a large solo show puzzle, your help is greatly appreciated and Im very grateful that you would find time to answer.

Hi,

no problem. You just ask... maybe our debate here will help someone else as well.

First of all you can try before buy, because iMiX16 Go app has all the features enabled, but it has time limited use (channels are stopped and commercial to buy Pro version pops on screen from time to time). So you can test everything, before spending some money.

So if I switch away from the imix16 app, my iPad homescreen will be on external display? But as soon as I switch back to imix 16 (to make it foreground app again) will it automatically switch back its output to external display?
YES.

How does detection of app and activation priorities to external display work anyway?
Operating system handles this. Foreground app is always displayed on external display. If foreground app has no additional logic (like my apps, Photos, VLC player, ... for example) you see the same thing as on your iPad screen.

HDMI spliter: once signal “leaves the building” you can have as many HW gear to route the signal, so i don’t see a problem here. Of course HW gear must be compatible with each other. Here i can not help much, for our shows i always use VGA or HDMI directly to a projector. The only important things i can say regarding this subject are:
1. make sure you have original Apple HDMI adapter (lighting or USB C depends on your iPad model),
2. if you have iPad Pro 2018 (USB C) buy this:
https://www.hypershop.com/collections/hyperdrive/products/hyperdrive-6-in-1-hub-for-ipad-pro-2018?variant=19332717412414
I use it and it works great. You can even use HDMI just for video and audio jack for audio, so you don’t need to transfer audio signal thru HDMI. And also charge the iPad at the same time.

iPad is great, however just one port (lightning or USB C) may not be enough for more complex shows and you might consider using Mac and MiX16 PRO app for macOS. Not just because of multiple ports but also macOS does not force foreground app to be displayed on external display. You can minimize MiX16 PRO and on external display you will still have your video playing. And since you can connect 4 external displays on macOS you can set external display for each video channel in MiX16 PRO.
